The Best Way for Teens to Get Rid of Gynecomastia

The best way to get rid of gynecomastia as a teenager (without surgery) is to grow out of it. Gyno is most prevalent in boys ages 10-12 and rarely occurs or continues past 17 years, and it takes anywhere from 2-3 years for this condition to disappear. Generally, 90% of gynecomastia cases in teens resolve on their own, over time, without intervention. Studies show that if your breast tissue has a diameter larger than 4 cm, there is an increased chance that it may not regress or reverse completely. Consider exercise and fitness as an option as they are always healthy choices whether you have gyno or not.

Change your diet – The best way to get rid of gyno begins with a healthy diet. If you eat a lot of junk food, cut back, and if you need motivation to get healthy, consider that your reward is getting rid of your man boobs. Eat healthier foods and more fruits and vegetables. Avoid meals that are rich in fatty foods and empty calories since they often promote stored body fat in all areas of your body, especially your breasts.

Start an exercise program – Include moderate and frequent exercise in the management of your gynecomastia. Try jogging or brisk walking for about 30 minutes every day to help reduce the fat in your body. The more exercise you perform, the smaller your man boobs and healthier you will be. Add arm and chest exercises, like push-ups and bench presses to help firm up your chest. Heavy resistance training should not begin until after puberty and your long bones (legs and arms) have reached their peak (complete) length.

Surgery is not the best way to get rid of or reverse gynecomastia in teenagers unless the breast tissue becomes lumpy. Breast lumps may require surgical reduction and reversal, so consult a physician. Otherwise, consider other remedies, wait it out (grow out of it) or reverse the problem through strict diet and moderate and frequent exercise. These steps will also help prevent future gyno and the need for additional reductions in the future. Check more on that page.

Avoid Drugs and Alcohol

Drinking to the point of liver damage will affect the way your body metabolizes hormones and will cause breast tissue development in men. Eliminate or at least reduce your alcohol intake to avoid gynecomastia, liver damage, or kidney failure.

Marijuana use can also be the cause of your gynecomastia. Animal research has shown that repeated exposure to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active component in marijuana, can result in a rapid decrease in testosterone levels, a reduction of testicular size and abnormalities in sperm. Weigh your choices; is it worth it?

Anabolic steroid use and abuse confuses your endocrine system, making it falsely believe that there is enough testosterone in your body, which results in a reduction or complete shutdown of testosterone production. When you stop a steroid cycle, it takes the body a considerable amount of time to begin producing normal levels of testosterone. During this period the level of estrogen is high related to the testosterone, resulting in breast tissue development.

Gynecomastia Surgery

As a last resort, the most effective and permanent approach to reversing gynecomastia is through elective cosmetic (plastic) surgery. In medical terms, surgery to reduce breast size is called reduction mammoplasty: mammo (breast) plasty (plastic surgery). A skilled plastic surgeon can remove the offending breast tissue.
If you choose this route, your surgery will begin with anesthesia, and then your surgeon will perform one of these types of surgery:

  • Liposuction – If your gynecomastia contains fatty deposits, your surgeon will use liposuction to remove the deposits and reduce the profile of your breasts.
  • Excision – If your gynecomastia involves true glandular tissue, your surgeon will remove the excess tissue with a blade (excised).

Gynecomastia isn’t considered necessary surgery and may not be covered by insurance, so you may have to pay for it. Call your chosen plastic surgeon for a more accurate and detailed estimate.

Unless there is a specific medical reason like calcification or lumps in your breast tissue, breast reduction surgery should not be your first choice. Surgery is risky and expensive. Explore the natural breast reduction solutions before considering invasive procedures.
